Work Signals research guide
How to find local builders and trades
Finding a local builder or trade starts with a clear description of the work. Whether you need an extension, a renovation, a roof repair or an electrical project, explain what you need, where it is and when you would like it done.

Describe the work before looking for a contractor
A useful job brief helps a contractor decide whether the project fits their services. Include the type of work, approximate size, current condition, materials you have in mind and any access constraints. Say whether you need one specialist trade or several trades working on the same project.
- Extensions and conversions: describe the intended space, approximate dimensions and whether you have drawings.
- Renovations and internal work: identify the rooms, repairs or improvements and whether the property will be occupied.
- Roof and loft work: explain the visible issue or planned change and the property’s access.
- Windows, doors, gardens and driveways: give approximate quantities, dimensions and material preferences.
- Energy and electrical projects: describe the installation or improvement you need and any existing equipment.
Keep personal contact details and the exact address out of any description that other subscribers will read. On Work Signals, there is a separate private section for that information.
Set an estimated budget and realistic dates
Provide a budget amount or range and your preferred start and completion dates. Your estimate helps explain the intended scope; it is not a contractor quote. A contractor may need a site visit and more information before pricing the work.
Explain any flexibility in the description. Choose a contact window that gives interested businesses time to discuss the project before your preferred start date, and state the times and contact method that suit you.
Explain your planning position
State the project’s current planning status accurately. If an application has been submitted or approved, the Work Signals form asks for the council and reference in the private section so our team can review the information.
Email verification and job review do not confirm permission or other approvals. Before committing to work, establish which requirements apply to your particular project with the relevant authority or professional adviser.
Post a job free on Work Signals
Customers do not need an account or payment to post a building or home improvement job. Select the relevant house areas, describe the work and provide your budget, dates and private details.
- Submit the form and open the private verification link sent to your email.
- Confirm your email within 48 hours. Our team reviews the job before Work Signals subscribers can see it.
- Subscribers read the reviewed job information and town or area, then express interest.
- Our administrator reviews interest and selects which subscribers receive your private contact details by email.
Your name, exact address, postcode, email and phone are hidden from the subscriber listing. You decide whether to discuss the project or accept a quote. Posting does not guarantee replies, availability or an appointment. Read the privacy information and terms before submitting.
Compare contractors before agreeing to work
Ask interested contractors about experience with similar projects, references, insurance and any qualifications relevant to the work. Subscriber access and administrator review do not guarantee those credentials or the standard of workmanship.
Compare written quotes for the same scope. Check what each includes, materials, exclusions, expected timing and payment arrangements. Agree who supplies materials, manages other trades and deals with changes. Keep a written record of the agreed work and price.
Close or withdraw your job when plans change
Your Work Signals job closes on the contact-until date you choose. You can also withdraw it using the private link in your verification email. Withdrawal stops new interest and further contact releases; emails already sent cannot be recalled.
