Look beyond the word “roofing”

Planning descriptions may mention a new roof, changes to a roofline, a dormer, rooflights or an extension with a different roof form. Those terms describe different scopes of work. A rooflight-only proposal may suit a different business from a substantial roof alteration.

In the member search, start with Windows and roofing and try individual keywords such as roof or roofing. Also run a broader keyword search for dormer: a dormer proposal can be categorised under extensions and conversions, so relying on a single category can miss useful records.

Decide what the application actually tells you

  • Alteration or wider project? Read whether the roof work stands alone or forms part of an extension or conversion.
  • Existing or proposed? The description may refer to an existing roof as context. Check the proposed drawings on the council register.
  • Which submission? A revised design or follow-up document is not necessarily a new roofing prospect. Compare the address and linked references.

Build a shortlist suited to your roofing business

Keep distinct searches for broad roof work and smaller rooflight or dormer projects. Search keywords one at a time, compare the results and save useful records. A proposal does not establish roof condition, materials quantities, access arrangements or an installation date.

Work Signals provides planning evidence rather than a list of households reporting leaks or requesting emergency repairs. It is therefore a starting point for researching proposed projects, not a substitute for an enquiry from a customer.
